Let’s be honest: the sparkle and magic of holiday decorating is amazing… but taking it all down and storing it? Not so much.

At Red’s Holiday Decor, I live and breathe all things Christmas—which means I’ve learned exactly how to store holiday décor efficiently, protect delicate items, and stay organized so decorating next year is stress-free (and even enjoyable!).

Here are my favorite pro-approved storage hacks that keep everything from ornaments to garlands looking good as new.

Using plastic bins, pegboards and a rolling tree bags to ensure your Christmas decor is safely tucked away for next year.
Essential Storage Necessities
  1. Color-Code Your Storage Bins

Skip the mystery boxes. Use color-coded bins to easily spot your Christmas décor by decorating colors.

  • Large bins for decor, extra large bins for garland and centerpieces

  • Clear bins = versatile and let you see what’s inside

  • Label all sides with the contents, color and/or room/location (example: "Living Room Garlands", "Glass Hurricanes", “Red Decor”)

Pro Tip:  Use stackable bins for easy storage in garages or closets and group by room or décor theme.

  1. Store Ornaments Like a Pro

Your ornaments are delicate, detailed, and often sentimental—keep them safe!

My top storage hacks:

  • Use ornament storage boxes with adjustable dividers and hard shells.

  • Save the original packaging with the foam to protect fragile and glass pieces.

  • Wrap fragile or glass ornaments in tissue paper or bubble wrap before placing in compartments.

Bonus Tip: Group ornaments by color or theme and label each section so you can quickly pull exactly what you need next year.

  1. Tame the Ribbon Tangle

Ribbon is one of the most-used items in holiday decorating—and it’s also one of the easiest to ruin if stored poorly.

Ribbon storage tips:

  • Use a plastic bin with a dowel rod to hang spools (you can pull ribbon directly from the box!).

  • Secure ends with painter’s tape or rubber bands to prevent unraveling.

  • Store ribbon by color or season in clear bins or labeled drawers.

  1. Wrangle Your Garland & Greenery

Garlands and wreaths can get crushed if you toss them into a bin. Protect the shape and fluff by storing them smartly.

  • Hang wreaths on a pegboard or garment rack with labeled tags.

  • Place garlands in large storage bags or plastic bins, layered with tissue or bubble wrap.

  • Add scent-saver sachets (like cinnamon sticks or cedar chips) to keep things fresh.

Designer Tip: Store garlands in their full shape when possible to avoid time-consuming re-fluffing.

  1. Protect Your Tree

If you use an artificial tree, how you store it is just as important as how you decorate it.

  • Use a rolling tree bag instead of the original box—it saves time and protects branches.

  • For pre-lit trees, wrap sections in plastic wrap to keep lights and limbs intact.

  • Label sections (top/middle/base) for faster assembly next year.

Bonus Tip: Place a laminated photo of the fully decorated tree in the bag so you remember your theme setup!

  1. Designate a Holiday Storage Zone

Whether it’s a spare closet, garage shelving, or attic space, keeping all holiday décor in one place is a game changer.

  • Store by color, room or décor theme: Entryway, Mantel, Tablescape, Tree, etc.

  • Keep an inventory sheet or digital checklist for quick reference.

  • Make room for new purchases by donating unused items at the end of the season.

  1. Invest in the Right Supplies - For The Best Holiday Storage Hacks

Good storage pays off in time and money. Here are a few of my must-haves:

  • Ornament and wreath storage bins (QVC has great ones!)

  • Rolling tree bags

  • Clear stackable bins with labels

  • Adjustable shelves or utility racks

  • Moisture absorbers and scent sachets

Introduction

Ever wonder what goes into creating those stunning Christmas displays that instantly fill a room with holiday magic? As a professional holiday designer every day during the season is a whirlwind of creativity, planning, and pure Christmas magic — it is more than just hanging ornaments and fluffing garlands. It's about bringing a vision to life and transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary holiday experience for all to enjoy!

From sourcing the perfect décor to crafting one-of-a-kind displays, every day is different. Come behind the scenes and step into a day in my life as a luxury holiday decorator!

From the Consultation to Christmas Magic

Every project begins with a personalized consultation. This is where I meet with each client — whether it’s a homeowner, business owner, or event planner — to discuss their inspiration, color palette, and overall holiday vision. Together, we review every detail, from the size and style of the tree to the theme and mood they want their guests to feel when they walk into the space. Once the concept is finalized, the shopping begins! This is one of my favorite parts of the process — hunting for the perfect tree, hand-selecting ornaments, ribbons, sprays, and florals that align with the chosen theme. Every detail is carefully considered so that each piece complements the next, creating a cohesive and magical design.

The Evening Prior Is When It All BeginsBehind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Holiday Designer

The evening begins with a Coca Cola or glass of Zinfandel in hand and preparing for tomorrow's installations. Before turning in for the night, I:

  • Prep all the decor – Cut all tags, and wire all ornaments in advance to ensure a smooth install.

  • Pack up the bins – Arrange the decorations in order of type of decorations, size, color schemes (if using more than one color, ribbon and all required materials such a wire, wire cutters, scissors, etc.

  • Add finishing touches – Finish up all hand designed wreaths, garlands and centerpieces.

Pro Tip: Being prepared ahead of time is crucial! This will save a lot of time when you arrive for the installation.

6:00 AM – Early Morning Prep & Planning

The day starts early with coffee in hand and a game plan for the day’s installations. Before heading out, I:

  • Check my schedule – Each project is different, whether it’s a home, corporate office, or boutique storefront.

  • Review client inspiration boards – I go over colors, themes, and special requests to ensure every design matches their vision.

  • Load up the Jeep/truck – Trees, garlands, lights, decor, oversized bows, decorating materials and my favorite ladder—everything is packed and organized to maximize efficiency.

Pro Tip: A well-organized décor checklist is key! Forgetting one piece can throw off the entire design.

8:00 AM – On-Site Setup Begins

Once we arrive at the client’s location, the real magic begins! Each space is different, but the process typically follows these steps:

BEFORE - Fluffed 7ft Christmas prepped to be fully transformed.
Before: Fluffed Christmas Tree ready to be decorated

  1. Unloading & Sorting – Boxes of ornaments, ribbons, and twinkling lights are carefully unpacked.

  2. Tree Setup & Fluffing – A well-shaped tree makes all the difference. I fluff every branch to create a full, natural look before decorating.

  3. Lighting Perfection – Lights go on before any ornaments to ensure even coverage and a warm glow.

  4. Mantel & Entryway Installations – Garlands, bows, and stockings are styled for that picture-perfect holiday welcome.

Pro Tip: We use a “layering” method—for our Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Holiday Designer starts with base decorations like ribbon and working up to the final embellishments for a polished look.

12:00 PM – The Creative Challenge Begins

This is where the real artistry comes in! Every tree, garland, and tablescape is carefully styled to bring the holiday vision to life. Some highlights include:

  • Ribbon Placement – Flowing ribbon is arranged in cascading designs for an elegant touch.

  • Ornament Styling – Larger ornaments go first, followed by smaller fillers to balance the design.

  • Adding Floral Picks & Sprays – These create texture, dimension, and that professional, high-end look.

Pro Tip: A mix of matte, shiny, and glittered ornaments adds depth and makes a tree visually stunning!

3:00 PM – Final Touches & Client Reveal

Once the major pieces are in place, it’s time for the finishing details:

AFTER: Fully decorated Christmas tree decorated in stunning gold and cream decor with matching gifts and festive large gold deer.
After: Fully Decorated Gold & Cream Christmas Tree adorned with stunning luxe ribbon and Gift Boxes and gorgeous Reindeer to finish the look.

  • Fluffing and Adjustments – Every bow, branch, and ornament is perfected.

  • Photo & Video Captures – I take before-and-after shots for clients (and social media!).

  • Grand Reveal Moment – Clients finally get to see their transformed space—it’s always the best part of the day!

Pro Tip: Seeing clients light up with joy is what makes all the hard work worth it. Many say, “It feels like Christmas just arrived!”

5:00 PM – Clean-Up & Prepping for the Next Install

After a long day of decorating, there’s still work to do:

  • Pack Up Tools & Extra Supplies – Everything is cleaned and stored for the next project.

  • Confirm Next Day’s Schedule – Each night, I go over upcoming installations to ensure every detail is covered.

  • Engage with Clients & Social Media – I share sneak peeks and answer client questions about holiday décor.

Pro Tip: Sharing behind-the-scenes moments on Instagram & Facebook helps inspire future clients and show the magic in progress!

Designer Tips to Transform your Christmas Tree into your Holiday Statement Piece

Christmas Tree Styling: From Ordinary to Extraordinary

Decorating for the holidays is an exciting tradition, but achieving that polished, designer look can be tricky without the right techniques. As a professional holiday decorator, I’ve learned the best insider tips to create stunning Christmas trees, elegant mantels, and welcoming doorways that transform any space. Whether you’re decorating your home or business, these expert tricks will help you achieve a flawless holiday look! Below are a few of my Expert Tips & Tricks for Decorating ~ Your Christmas Tree

Four different types of beautifully decorated Christmas Trees. From Emerald Green to Silver and White to stunning Blues to our Red and White Candy Cane themed tree. All stunning in their own way.
Four stunning luxurious Christmas trees, each uniquely styled with elegant decor to create a festive and opulent ambiance.

A beautifully decorated tree is the centerpiece of holiday décor. Follow these steps to create a professional-looking Christmas tree that wows guests.

1. Fluff & Shape Your Tree Like a Pro

Before decorating, spend time fluffing and shaping each branch to make your tree look full and lush. Bend branches outward and space them evenly for a natural, balanced look.

2. Start with Lights for Depth & Glow - if your have an unlit tree

• Use warm white lights for a classic, cozy feel or mix in colored lights for a festive pop.

• Weave lights from the inside out to create dimension.

• For a fully lit look, use 100 lights per foot of tree height (e.g., a 7ft tree needs at least 700 lights).

3. Layer Ribbon for a Luxurious Look

Ribbon adds depth and elegance. Try these techniques:

  • Cascading loops – Create loose, flowing loops instead of wrapping the tree tightly.

  • Layered ribbons – Combine two ribbons (solid & patterned) for a high-end look.

  • Tucked sections – Weave ribbon in and out rather than wrapping it around like a spiral.

4. Ornaments: Mix Sizes & Textures

  • Use large ornaments (5”-6”) deeper inside the tree to create depth.

  • Add medium and small ornaments (2”-4”) toward the branch tips for balance.

  • Incorporate a mix of matte, shiny, and glittered ornaments to reflect light beautifully.

5. The Finishing Touch: A Show-Stopping Topper

A tree topper completes the look! Choose from:

  • Classic Star or Angel for traditional elegance.

  • Oversized Bow for a chic, modern touch.

  • Floral Picks & Sprays to create a full, designer-style topper.

Pro Tip: Always step back and adjust any gaps or uneven areas to ensure a polished, professional finish.
